The Obamandate???...
We can recall the sweeping tide which brought the late Ronald Reagan into the Presidency so many years ago, but it still seems like yesterday. We recall the pundits using the phrase "Mandate. Mandate. Mandate." to describe the huge -swing victory by which Mr. Reagan and his administration took office. We see a similar, yet color-negative, reverse-political image of the same happening in the Obama Campaign juggernaut. "Obamania" really seems to be sweeping this nation of ours.
It doesn't seem to matter much what Hilary's real role will be in the Obama administration. She may not get to be the veep, but she may get the nod for some other cabinet position (perhaps she'll even get the Secretary of State position and be a future counterpart to Madeleine Albright?)...we wonder.... But that is little to ponder about, when one considers that we might have our first minority President of the United States (and perhaps the first minority Veep and first minority President and Veep team, ever...)...but, we wonder, we wonder...
Indeed, Mr. Reagan was known as "The Great Communicator". Mr. Obama seems not only to share this trait, he excels at it. Mr. Reagan was also known as the "The Teflon President", for his seeming ability to let the slime of scandal and controversy to just slide off him. So far, Mr. Obama seems to share this talent as well. Mr. Reagan did accomplish some great things, we recall. For example, the ending and victory of the Cold War. Somehow, before he became the president, we sensed Mr. Reagan had some great goal (like the usurpation of Communism) - and means to accomplish the same - in his war quiver. We have been trying - desperately - to peer into Mr. Obama's quiver, as well. Well, we just can't seem to find it. Two out of three isn't bad? Or is it? Voters and supporters beware...
Oh, no, you say, he's going to end the wars! Yes, well he might. But, is the power to pull the troops out really that great a thing? Tell us, how many of you could easily pull that plug if it were given over to you? We thought so. And, what would be your following act? We thought so, too...
Mr. McCain is, unfortunately for him, starting to look like a doddering, slightly-nauseous, shuffling, stumbling formula-candidate for the Right Wing. He might even be the cause of a view red states swinging to blue states when the November election gets here. Even his grin drips with a parody of saliva. Can somebody get this man a drool-bucket? Ye cats!
The Obamanation seems to be here. And the tide is turning to the left. Perhaps for a long time to come. We'll see how that tide responds under the new moon sometime in January. Perhaps we''ll see real positive changes come about. A pull-out or cease-fire or withdrawal from our terrorist-war fronts in Asia? And what will come about then? Will the economic engines pull out of decline and get us going back on track again? We can only hope. Mr. Obama does seem symbolic of that change, but he doesn't seem to herald it. Nor does Mr. McCain. Res ipsa loquitor. Sigh, wake up and smell the skatole.
Hunter S. Thompson, where are you when we need you the most?
