A Eulogy for a Great One Passed

This morning awoke and felt a sense

Of loss unsure, though sensing Death.

Sheets of flame crossed my eye

It seemed the moon had fell from the sky.

Surely dead, so soon gone

I heard once the lion roar

And turned my head

And, too soon, he was dead.

This solar orbit once soared,

Once so long,

Once so large,

In Public Sight and tearing Eye,

Forever and for now,

Eclipsed from our sky.

Its as though the

Moon has fallen from the sky.

With this in similar dread

Losing from our smaller sky

One once called Ted.

Ferrum orum egretudo and Krugman Says Whew!!! and More for Monday, August 0, 2009

OK, let's take the "analysis" approach used by a certain late-afternoon TV political commentator (TVPC) to some recent ("incoherent") comments by a recent former governor of Alaska on the subject(s) of health care (reform), euthanasia and 'death panel(s)'.
TVPC: OK, so you're against health care reform? In a recent CNN report on PricewaterhouseCoopers' Health Research Institute, the accounting firm recently found that $ 1.2 Trillion is wasted on American health care every year. Now, the current administration's health plan means to address this waste and reduce or eliminate it. Now, wouldn't you agree that that is a good thing? The Gov: What do you mean by that?
TVPC: OK, moving along, Mr. Obama has come out publicly saying that this health care reform is not about euthanasia. Euthanasia is not provided for in HR 3200, if you read every article in this thousand-plus omnibus bill. Have you read it? The Gov: Oh, you know, I've read all of them.
TVPC: OK, about the only population in the United States that is routinely and legally given euthanasia, are those persons given the death penalty for capital crimes convictions. Would you then agree that HR 3200 provides a similar penalty for our nation's uninsured? The Gov: Oh, I suppose so.
TVPC: Good. Making progress...wouldn't you then say that your extension (of this concept) of a 'death panel' will be a trial-by-jury of the terminally ill and incurable for euthanasia made legal by health care reform? And that such a change of adjudication will give judicial power over all health care decisions in the US? The Gov: Why, whatever do you mean by that?
TVPC: Oh, never mind, just read the talking points while we go to commercial...
You see, it is our position (the editors of this blog...) that this extension of the concept of living will to euthanasia to 'death panels' is just silly and absurd and can be destroyed by philosophical and legal analysis via Reduction ad absurdum. People just need to use logic when provoked by these and other vacuous assumptions by their Right Wing leadership and lobbyists. That the idea that our entire judicial framework can be usurped by health care regulations does not work. The Gov may be suffering a kind of disease that cannot be cured by health care reform, however: Ferrum orum egretudo.
We'll return to a more detailed examination and analysis of this/these arguments as time permits...

Decibating the Healthcare Reform Debate, Murdochiating the Internet & More for Thursday, August 6, 2009

You see, the reason we've decided to go on the defensive against Rupert Murdoch's "Internet-pay initiative" is that basically it goes against the Common Good. For example, Mr. Murdoch has signalled that you will have to pay his admittedly Right Wing-ideologue news and webcasts and other media for reading, viewing and use of the same. That seems unfair, when reading today's news we found the following information: Lead-based Consumer Paint Remains A Global Public Health Threat and Marine Pest Species Costing Billions In Damage To Fisheries, Coastal Communities And Infrastructure Are Spreading. Do you really think that you have to pay Mr. Murdoch (whose compensation is already around $ 30,000,000/year) and Fox News Corporation to read such vital and important information?
We think this is the beginning-of-the-end for huge, monopolistic media and corporations that have decided to charge us and you, the public, private monies for vital public information in regards to your health, your money, your well-being and your existence. This goes against any of the concepts that we feel are familiar to those in a democracy. Democratic thought-processes have trained us to think that we have a Right-to-Know (RTK). Of course, we are expanding on the original concept that the public has a right to know of any potential chemical hazards that are in our backyards, our homes and our neighborhoods. You already have a government right to know that much.
Mr. Murdoch and Fox have been given the right to make huge monopolies and media corporations. Now he has decided we should have to pay for the privilege to have access to that monopoly's news and media and output. Some of this is justifiable. Artistic and copyrighted works are protected under law. But, the reading and viewing of RTK material is our right and a right that we should not have to pay for. Yes, we know, this is "loophole, loopy" politics. It is also a wedge to win back your right to information that is rightfully yours. Mr. Murdoch, if successful, will have you paying money, cash and so on for that right - or at least part of it.
If this course of action cannot be undone, we at least think that Fox Corporation should be legally required to provide free, public information vital under the RTK concept. He/they have already been paid for this by being given the right to form excessively large and controlling monopolies. We suggest that if this course of action is taken, some violation of the public trust will have occurred and will continue to occur under these circumstances. The other "news" - Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Bill O'Reilly and the rest - you can pay for - because its not necessary and not covered under any concept of RTK. Of course, this should create a large-type bureaucratic mess that will require Fox News or some agency appointed to oversee them and regulate which news and information can and cannot be free. That will, of course, create a giant headache for Fox and Mr. Murdoch. That's OK, as we've said, they've already been given the privilege of creating this huge monopoly which may prove to be their own Frankenstein's monster. On the plus side, a new huge bureaucracy which decides which news and information has to be paid and which has to be free will create innumerable jobs. Which will ultimately be good for the economy. Hurrah!
