WHO Loses H1N1 Count & More for Friday, July 17, 2009

Wow! We did not really think that those in the Bush administration would have really planned a covert operation to eliminate members of Al Qaeda. Had they succeeded, would they really have used 'right wing death squads' (similar to those in South America some years ago...and/or was it Central America?) to liquidate the likes of Osama? The use of the 'death squad' term would seem accurate, as any such liquidations would have been - by definition - extrajudicial. Would they have used snipers/sharpshooters to take out individual members and other terrorists? And when exactly did this plan (plot?) start to hatch? What if they had succeeded? Would a full-out jihad be in full-swing against the US at this time? Apart from the 'what if' speculations, we find this case to be intriguing. One more thing (or two), is 'the operation' truly deactivated (as says Mr. Panetta), or do we have the possibility of some rogue active elements still 'out there' pursuing Mr. bin Laden and his compatriates? And, were Chinese nationals really given access to interrogate Gitmo detainees?

Oil Price Culprit Found & Iran's Legal Threat to Journalism & More for Friday, July 3, 2009

"That which is done out of love, is beyond good & evil". Which is probably one of our favorite aphorisms, penned by Nietzsche. We thought of this when hearing some of the recorded interviews given by Mark Sanford. Based on those conversations, we tend to believe the man was truly, deeply in love with his Argentine mistress. Normally, we would link to a Wiki page of the woman in question, but the Wikipedia appears to have deleted the page link - something that they had openly discussed previously. We don't know if it is possible to fall into the trap of love with such a thunderous thud as did the governor. Love has been unknown to us and our staff for a long time. Our senior editor was in love - once - many years ago. But since Suzie (there's that name again) passed, we haven't felt anything like love for a long, long time. So it is hard for us to imagine what heights (or depths) drove this governor. We can only try to feel for him. But, if he is guilty of love, it should be no crime. Consider the aphorism noted above. Please do understand, we do feel (pity?) for the jilted wife of the governor. Whose pain and hurt cannot be measured by us. Men and women, we think, can and do fall in and out of love. Perhaps this will be the case between the governor and his wife. Or his mistress... At any rate, the police seem to be clearing him of other wrongdoing. Why did we even broach this subject? Perhaps because we were struck by the philosopher's aphorism written so long ago, when we heard the governor give his homilies. And, hence, ours - though we heard no sermon. The only sermon we can relate to is our own passion and the world's passion for lovers' caught in a forbidden embrace.
