Binyam Claims Gitmo Torture and on the Trail of Illegal Meth Labs and More for Monday, February 23, 2009

(Presumed Destroyed) Meth Lab Insides image licensed under Creative Commons by Katie@!

Re: The posted image is of a presumed destroyed meth lab. We found this image currently posted on Flickr.com. In our search for related images, we could not believe how many images were posted of apparently, freely-operating, illegal, home-made meth labs we found posted on the Flickr site. Not knowing if these images were real or not or still extant, we weren't sure what to do about these or if Flickr is already aware of their presence. If not, then why isn't Flickr aware of them? Or are they? Is it up to the Public to bring this to their attention? Comments? For example: Parents and Community Leaders/Organizers, doesn't the appearance of such images online infuriate you and make you want you to do something about them? Please note, the only reasons we chose to publish this image is to educate the public, to relate it to the story on Yahoo! (Meth makers leave behind a toxic trail at motels), it is a continuing/growing problem in our communities and the apparent lab depicted has already been destroyed or is not even a real operating meth lab. Also, very little, if any, information about the stocking and running of such a lab can be gained from this photo. The other photos we found posted are much more informative and (we think) dangerous.

Why do we know so much about this topic? One of our editors formerly worked in a large-chain Pharmacy that currently sells over-the-counter medications containing the ingredient pseudoephedrine. Within the recent past, regulations restricting the amount of sale and purchase of this ingredient had been imposed by the Federal government. Part of our editor's training did educate him/her regarding the potential use and abuse of pseudoephedrine in the illegal/illicit make and manufacture of homemade meth by "street chemists". Exacting I.D. Checks and quantities sold statements are required whenever the public makes a purchase of pseudoephedrine. We urge the public not to participate in any activities related to the purchase, sale, make and manufacture and distribution of such products for illegal and illicit purposes such as the production of illegal meth and similar banned/restricted substances.

What is also noteworthy about pseudoephedrine is that the Wikipedia states; "Internationally, pseudoephedrine is listed as a Table I precursor under the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.[1]"
