It was a good morning to rise and vote early today. We decided it best to vote after 8 AM, to avoid the "commuter crowd". We were surprised to see only 30-some voters at around 8:30 AM today. But, the number did start to swell to 40 after we got in line with our ballot. There were no security guards. Nobody was there to pressure us to vote for this party or that party. Only a few non-partisan party/vote representatives were there - and they mostly observed the "100 foot rule". No camera crews nor any sign of media were there. Just us and the election officials - and some students as our precinct uses a grade school building to conduct its polling. Nobody denied us our vote - our voter registration had not been pulled as it turned out - even though we were affiliated with the "wrong party". The lines were neat and orderly. We were surprised to see our senior editor show up to vote as he was/is sick from illness and starvation. A campaign worker was handing out free cookies. Our senior editor took one - he didn't say if he voted for the person that was represented by the cookie. He did tell us that all the McCain campaign had to do to get his vote was to show up with some fast-food gift cards. Neither the Republican nor the Democratic representatives were present. When it came time for our senior editor to turn in his ballot, the ballot machine sounded an alarm. The election official said "You voted twice on Propostion 88-1!" Our senior editor responded, "I know I only voted once." The election official offered him a new ballot. Our editor declined and was offered to press the "accept" button on the ballot machine indicating that he accepted the ballot and his vote should be counted. He told us his ballot # was 247, but he was voter # 240 - on this basis he calculated that there had been at least 5 other "glitches that morning". He estimated 88 glitches for both precincts that day of voting. He noted that it was the same as the Propostion number he had got the "error" message or "glitch" from. We thought that odd. Based on that, we figured on about .000059% "glitches" in the vote tabulations for our Election Day. Would such a number keep our election polls and results running late in the night? We can only speculate. However, even with "glitches" we are still predicting Barack Obama to be the presumptive President-Elect this night. Which we think is good news, our senior editor recounting how he had always experienced much better times under a Democractic leadership. We thought of his starvation, and hoped he is right.
