The End of Nations? and More For Friday, February 6, 2009

Our senior editor has come to the sad realization that he may not be around much longer. He has been unemployed for several months, is lacking unemployment insurance and has just run out of his own funds. He has been seeking employment all this time, but nothing. All this, and he has lost his appetite, too. He can barely put food into his own mouth, much less choke it down.

And of course, in our current economic mess, he wonders how many other folks are now facing starvation? Of course, he's thinking of those who were recently making as much as $ 80K - $ 100 K per year and are now facing eviction. Witness some of the i-Reports that appeared on CNN.com this week and the past. What a horrorshow. We're not talking about those nations in the Third World and/orlike Zimbabwe. We're referring to the new regime of poverty forming throughout the world. Look at the crises in the USA, Europe and China, to name just a few.

Originally, the image of Procyon lotor was loaded on this page in association with a seemingly "cute" story about some raccoons sneaking on the White House grounds. (Remember: they are prime vectors for Rabies and can be extremely dangerous in that regard). They are also well known for their comical antics of scrounging through trash cans and similar images.

Our senior editor wonders, hasn't he been reduced to the level of the Procyon lotor, isn't he about to start scrounging through trash cans and waste? No, he isn't, because he's lost his appetite, if you recall. He is not eating - or forcing himself to eat. He only shows a will to live in running this blog for as long as he can. But, we digress. Isn't the Procyon lotor becoming an emerging symbol for the state that the rest of humanity is entering? After the coming economic catastrophe, will or won't humanity be reduced to scrounging through trash cans and the "corpse of the old world" somewhat like in Beyond Thunderdome and the other Mad Max films? Is this the End of Nations?

And, our lead-link (see below) points to an End of Nations through a watery demise due largely to global warming (much like in Waterworld). It seems like the combined impacts of the economic collapse and the global warming-induced flooding of the earth would seem to presage the End of Nations? Should you be concerned? We think you should. If it does happen, and it seems likely, the racoon, the semi-accidental symbol of this posting, will be washing its waste in the newly formed Lake Washington D. C.

The Coming Space-Based Economy?

With the constant flood (or should we say "surge"...) of bad economic news, layoffs, billion-dollar losses, it appears that the entire earth is suffering. Or should we rename the planet? How about renaming Earth "Layoff" and hang up a "Positions Wanted" sign? Pouring loads of cash into this economic and financial rathole does not appear to be working. Why is this?

Well, we believe that an economy is based on business and finance and production and consumption. But an ailing business sector just can't support the other three table legs of our economy. Is it time to move off world? There are indeed, active projects even businesses that are headed in that direction. Just do a search for "Space Business" on the Wikipedia or some other source.

Obviously, its not enough. WE need to be active in the space-based Business NOW. We should have had an operating L5 station years ago. Just look up the work of the late great Dr. Gerard K. O'Neill. We admit ourselves, that we were a long time coming to this conclusion. Why do we focus so heavily on Earth-based activities, especially when we are routinely flying the skies (except for the occasional air disaster like yesterday's crash of Flight 1549). Note: We couldn't believe it, Wikipedia already has an active page on the event. Which demonstrates that there are hazards to flight and more so for space-flight. And our media just won't shy away from that.

Which might be part of the problem. Look at the attention Space Shuttle disasters have (naturally) received. (Notice we used the word received and shied away from the grammatically incorrect, if not awkward, word "gotten". We have even observed the august news commentator
Keith Olbermann using the word "gotten" on MSNBC's Countdown. But seriously Keith, we love you, in the philosophical sense of the word).

Which takes us to our soon-to-be President-Elect Barack Obama. We're hoping for some for visionary and forceful - even thought-provoking - action and legislation and movement from his soon-to-be excellency. We do love (again, in the philosophical sense...why are we on this word kick?) and admire the man and sincerely hope that he does take in the right direction and fend off the economic ruin that appears to be awaiting us here on Planet "Layoff".
